Legend has it that Lee-lan-au is Ojibwe for "Delight of Life."  Accurate or not, the idea rings true for anyone who has ever had the opportunity to visit this incredible peninsular county in the Peninsular State.

Leelanau County juts northward into Lake Michigan, creating the western boundary for the Grand Traverse Bay.  It encompasses a little over 2,500 square miles, 2,100 square miles of which is water!, making it the second-wettest county in the United States behind Keewanau County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. (82% water area-to-land area)

Home to a number of idyllic communities including Suttons Bay, Leland, Northport, Empire, Cedar, Maple City, Lake Leelanau, Omena, and Glen Arbor, as well as Peshawbestown, home of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians.  All but one of these communities sits right on the water and no matter where you are in Leelanau County, its natural beauty and nautical nature infuses life here with something unique and truly special.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was voted 'The Most Beautiful Place in America' by Good Morning America viewers last summer, and This out-of-the-way natural gem boasts 64 miles of incredible beaches along Lake Michigan, two large islands, 26 inland lakes(!), more than 50,000 acres of land under federal protection and management, not to mention the monumental sand dunes from which it gets its name.

Leelanau County boasts world-class wineries, fishing, golfing, hunting, boating, bird-watching, hiking, and myriad other outdoor activities, as well as botique shopping, and a vibrant arts & entertainment community.
